Build Your Way In

Stop asking whether you feel like working. Ask what has to be true for working to happen.

Listen first

Conditions beat motivation

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

There are days you sit down and work without a fight. They are not random.

Something was true on those days — a place, a time, a person, a sound, an empty desk. That is data, and you can build with it.

What's happening

Your environment is doing half the work

Guidance for ADHD consistently points toward changing environments and structures rather than relying on internal effort alone. That is not a lowering of standards; it is a recognition of where the leverage actually is.

A phone in another room, a specific chair, a friend on a video call doing their own homework — these are not tricks. They are external supports doing work your activation system finds expensive.

The aim is a short, personal list of conditions that reliably help, so that starting stops being a decision you have to win every single time.

Your Activation Menu

Not a routine — a menu. On any given day, one of these will be available even when the others aren't.

Set up tomorrow's first move tonight

Leave the book open to the right page, the document open on the screen, the bag by the door. Tomorrow you only have to do the task, not find it first.

Try this

Body doubling, unglamorously

Working alongside someone — in person or on a call, doing entirely unrelated things — is one of the most reliable activation supports there is.

  1. 01Message one person: 'working 4:30–5:15, want to be on a call?'
  2. 02Cameras on, microphones muted, no talking.
  3. 03Say what you're each starting, then start.
  4. 04Stop at the agreed time whether or not you're finished.

It works because someone else's presence supplies structure your own brain was having to generate alone.

Research says

Support the environment, not just the person

Clinical guidance recommends environmental and educational supports alongside any treatment — adjusting the surroundings, the structure and the demands, rather than relying only on the individual to try harder.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Good work days have conditions in common — find yours and reuse them.
  2. 02Setting up the first move in advance removes the search that stops most starts.
  3. 03Body doubling supplies structure you would otherwise have to generate alone.
