What's Actually Blocking It

Not starting has reasons. They are just rarely the reason you would give if someone asked.

Listen first

Six reasons a task doesn't start

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

'I don't know, I just didn't do it' is an honest answer and a useless one.

Underneath it there is almost always something more specific — and specific problems have specific fixes.

What's happening

Six blocks that look identical from outside

Avoidance is a single behaviour with several very different causes. It is too big. It is too vague. It is boring. It is scary. It has no clear first step. Or you are afraid of doing it badly.

From the outside all six look the same: an undone task and a teenager who did not do it. From the inside they feel completely different, and each one needs something different from you.

Naming which one you are in is not a therapy exercise. It is the difference between the right fix and three weeks of the wrong one.

The useful question

Not why haven't I done this — but what is this specific task asking for that I don't have yet?

Pick one

Which one is it right now?

Perfectionism rarely looks like perfectionism. It usually looks like nothing happening.

Try this

The one-sentence rewrite

Before you start anything, rewrite what you were asked to do in your own words.

  • Complete the Romeo and Juliet taskWrite four paragraphs about why Act 3 changes everything
  • Study for the bio testMake flashcards for the 12 terms on the review sheet

If you cannot write the sentence, you have found the real block: you do not yet know what the task is.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Avoidance has at least six different causes, and each needs a different response.
  2. 02If you can't say the task in one plain sentence, defining it is the actual first task.
  3. 03Boredom and fear are real barriers — treat them with conditions, not willpower.
