The Pause Is Not Calm
You do not need to feel peaceful. You need ninety seconds between the feeling and the send button.
Listen first
Listen first: buying ninety seconds
Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser
Advice about staying calm is useless in the moment, because calm is not available in the moment.
Delay is available. Delay is physical, and you can plan it in advance.
The principle
You are buying time, not composure
The peak of an emotional surge is short. What extends it is what you do inside it: replying, arguing, rehearsing.
So the goal is a delay long enough for the second thought — which is almost always more accurate than the first — to arrive.
Delay works best when it's physical and decided in advance. In the moment, you will not invent a strategy. You will only execute one you already have.
Target
Ninety seconds. Not serenity.

Ninety Seconds of Space
The pause is not calm. The pause is delay — long enough for the second thought to arrive.
Where is pausing hardest?

The three swaps
Replace the reflex, not the feeling.
- Replying immediatelyDrafting with no recipient in the field
- Staying in the room to sort it outLeaving the room to be able to sort it out
- 'Let me explain''I want to get this right — can we come back to it after dinner?'
None of these require you to feel differently. That's the point.

Set the send delay
Turn on undo-send or a scheduled-send delay in your email client right now, and set it to the maximum. This is the single highest-yield two minutes in the course.
Research says
Delay is a documented regulation strategy
Emotion regulation research consistently finds that strategies applied early in the emotional cycle — before full engagement — are more effective than attempts to suppress once a response is underway. Delay is an early-cycle strategy.

Keep this
Three things to take.
- 01The pause buys time; it doesn't require calm.
- 02Plan a physical exit and a spoken line before you need them.
- 03Structural delays (undo send) work when willpower doesn't.
