After the Storm

The feeling is over — but everyone's a bit ruffled. Here's how to fix things and feel okay again.

Listen first

Listen first: the part nobody teaches

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

Nobody talks about the part AFTER the big feeling. You're tired. Maybe a bit embarrassed. Maybe someone else is upset too.

This lesson is about that part — because a good fix-up makes the whole thing shorter, and it teaches your brain that storms end.

What's happening

Storms pass. Repair is how we know.

After a big feeling, lots of kids feel two things at once: exhausted, and worried they've broken something — a friendship, a grown-up's mood, the whole day.

Here's the truth: almost everything can be repaired. And the repair is usually small: a sentence, a drawing, sitting near someone, a glass of water offered.

Repairing isn't saying the feeling was fake. The feeling was real AND the fix-up matters. Both are true.

Say it with us

Big feelings are allowed. Fix-ups are possible.

The Fix-It Plan

What to do after a hard moment so everyone feels okay again — name it, own your bit, offer something small.

You never have to say sorry for the feeling. You fix the actions, not the weather.

Try this

The three-part fix

A fix-up only needs three small parts.

  1. 01Name it: 'I got really mad.' (No excuses needed. Just the truth.)
  2. 02Own the bit that's yours: 'I shouldn't have grabbed it.'
  3. 03Offer something small: a do-over, a hug, a drawing, helping fix what got messed up.

You don't have to say sorry for the feeling. You repair the actions, not the weather.

What this looks like in real life

With a sibling

'I was really mad. I'm sorry I yelled. Want to restart the game?' Short is fine.

With a parent

You don't need a speech. Sitting next to them and leaning in is a repair too.

With yourself

After a storm, be a kind coach, not a mean judge: 'That was hard. My alarm is fast. I'm learning.'

You repair the actions, not the weather.

Notice

After a big feeling, what do YOU usually feel? (Pick any.)

All of these are normal. Knowing yours helps you know what you need afterwards.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01The part after the storm is a skill too.
  2. 02Repairs are small: name it, own your bit, offer something.
  3. 03You repair actions — never the feeling itself.
