Build the Conditions
Focus is downstream of five settings: sound, body, novelty, company and stakes. Change the settings, not yourself.

Listen first: the five settings
Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser
There's a version of your environment where the work is genuinely easier. Most people never find it because they're busy trying to be more disciplined in the wrong one.
Five settings do most of the work.
You don't need all five. You usually need two.
The five settings
Sound, body, novelty, company, stakes
Sound: silence is not neutral. For many ADHD brains a steady, wordless input is far better than quiet, and much better than conversation.
Body: attention follows a body that has moved recently. Ten minutes of walking before a focus block is not procrastination — it's setup.
Novelty: a new café, a different chair, a different pen. The novelty pays for attention that willpower can't buy.
Company: body doubling works. Not because you're supervised, but because someone else's presence supplies the low-level accountability your brain won't generate alone.
Stakes: a real, near, external consequence is the strongest lever there is — which is why everything gets done the night before.

Your Focus Conditions
Five settings. You usually only need to change two.
Change one at a time, so you know what actually helped.
Try this
Run one A/B test this week
Don't redesign your life. Change exactly one setting and watch what happens.
- Trying to focus in silence because that's what focused people doThe same task with a wordless soundtrack running
- Working alone at the same desk you always fail atThe same task on a video call with a friend who's also working
- Waiting until you feel readyTen minutes of walking, then straight into the first line
One change, measured honestly. That's the whole method.

You are not lacking discipline. You are working in the wrong room.

Three things to take.
- 01Five settings — sound, body, novelty, company, stakes — do most of the work.
- 02Change one setting at a time so you know what actually helped.
- 03Movement before focus is setup, not avoidance.
