Lesson 03 · 11 min

Stack the Activation

Interest, novelty, challenge and urgency are fuel. Boring tasks have none — so you bring your own.

Listen first

Listen first: bringing your own fuel

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

Ever noticed you can start anything the day before it's due? That's not a personality defect. That's proof your ignition works — when the fuel is right.

The fuel is activation: interest, novelty, challenge, urgency, a body that's awake. Boring-but-important tasks arrive with none of it.

This lesson is about adding fuel deliberately instead of waiting for panic to add it for you.

The fuel lines

Five ways to activate a dead task

Interest: connect it to something you already care about, even loosely. The admin task that protects the trip you're excited about is easier to start than the admin task in isolation.

Novelty: new location, new playlist, new notebook, new time of day. The task stays the same; the wrapper changes, and the wrapper is what your brain tastes first.

Challenge: make it a game against yourself. Beat yesterday's time. Do it in one sitting. Arbitrary stakes still count as stakes.

Urgency: a timer, a fake deadline, a person expecting something from you at 5pm. Lesson four is entirely about this one.

Body: a brain in a still, hungry, underslept body has no activation to spend. Ten minutes of movement before the doorway is fuel, not procrastination.

Course tool · Lesson 03

Your Activation Stack

The two or three fuel lines that reliably get your brain into motion — written down so you can use them on purpose.

Which fuels have actually worked on you before?

Two fuels is a stack. Five is a project. Keep it at two.

Notice

Which fuel has worked for you before — even accidentally?

Your stack is already in your history. This course just makes it deliberate.

Try this

Fuel one stalled task today

Pick one thing from your stall log. Don't do it yet — fuel it first.

  1. 01Choose two fuel lines from the list above.
  2. 02Apply them before you attempt the doorway: new place plus timer, walk plus playlist, whatever fits.
  3. 03Then do the doorway only. Notice whether ignition came easier.

Two fuels is usually enough. Stacking all five is its own avoidance.

Reframe

I should be able to just do it.

Nothing starts without fuel. I'll bring mine.

What this looks like in real life

The tax return

Laptop to a café, one hour on the clock, favourite playlist. Same return, different fuel.

The scary email

Written standing up at the counter, coat on, ten-minute timer. The posture says 'brief' and the brain believes it.

The Sunday life-admin

Paired with a long breakfast out. The errand rides along on something with its own pull.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Activation is fuel: interest, novelty, challenge, urgency, body.
  2. 02Dead tasks arrive with no fuel — add two lines before you start.
  3. 03Your history already shows which fuels work on you.
