Lesson 01 · 10 min
What It Explains (and What It Doesn't)
ADHD explains a pattern. It doesn't explain you. Getting the difference right is the whole game.
Listen first
Listen first: the explanation, not the excuse
Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser
When you first learn you have ADHD, two tempting moves appear. One: 'this explains nothing, I should just try harder.' Two: 'this explains everything, nothing is my choice.'
Both are wrong, and both will shrink your life. This lesson finds the honest middle.
The honest middle
Explanation is a floor, not a ceiling
ADHD genuinely explains why some things cost you more: starting boring tasks, holding instructions, regulating feelings, sensing time. That's neurology, not attitude.
It doesn't explain your taste in music, your humour, what you care about, or who you want to become. Those are yours.
The useful frame: ADHD tells you where the ground is uneven. It doesn't tell you where to walk.
Hold both
It's real, AND you're more than it. You never have to pick one.
Course tool · Lesson 01
The Identity Map
What's ADHD, what's you, what's both — sorted honestly, in your words.
Most people find the overlap list is the longest. That's not a problem — that's the interesting part.
Notice
Which parts of you have nothing to do with ADHD?
The last answer is the most honest one at your age. Figuring it out IS the work.
Reframe
Is everything about me just ADHD?
ADHD is one true thing about me. Not the only true thing.
What this looks like in real life
The diagnosis
Finally an explanation for the lost homework and the blurting — but also a weird fear: am I just a label now?
The friend group
You're the funny one, the chaotic one. Is that you, or is that dopamine? (It's you. The delivery system is just fast.)
The future
People say 'you'd be so smart if you just applied yourself.' You wonder what you could be if someone designed school for your brain instead.
Try this
Three lists, ten minutes
On paper or in notes: three columns.
- 01List one: things ADHD genuinely makes harder for me.
- 02List two: things about me that have nothing to do with ADHD.
- 03List three: things that are probably both — my intensity, my creativity, my chaos, my energy.
Most people find list three is the longest. That's not a problem. That's the interesting part.

Keep this
Three things to take.
- 01ADHD explains the uneven ground — not who you are or where you're going.
- 02'It's real' and 'I'm more than it' are both true at once.
- 03The most interesting parts of you are usually the overlap, not either list.
