Borrow Activation

Interest, urgency, novelty and other people are not cheats. For an ADHD nervous system they are the fuel that actually ignites.

Listen first

Before you read: why deadlines work and intentions don't

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

You already have proof that you can start things. You do it every time a deadline gets close enough to be frightening.

That is worth taking seriously rather than being ashamed of. It tells you exactly what your activation system responds to.

The work is to supply those signals deliberately and earlier, at a lower cost than panic.

What switches it on

Four reliable activators

Interest: something in the task, or beside it, that the brain actually wants. Music, a good pen, the podcast you only allow during admin.

Urgency: a real, near, visible deadline. Distant importance is abstract; a timer counting down is not.

Novelty: a different room, a different order, a different format. Sameness dulls activation fast.

Social presence: another human, in the room or on a call, doing their own thing beside you. This is the single strongest activator most people never try.

Reframe

Needing conditions to start is not a weakness. It is information about how you run.

Try this

Manufacture the deadline

Build a smaller, earlier, honest version of the urgency that usually arrives too late.

  1. 01Set a personal deadline well before the real one and write it where you will see it.
  2. 02Tell one person that deadline out loud, so it has a witness.
  3. 03Book the actual start as a calendar event with a location, not a to-do item.
  4. 04Set a visible countdown when you begin — a physical timer beats a phone.
  5. 05Afterwards, note which of the four activators did the work.

Try this

Body doubling, done properly

Presence, not supervision. The other person is not checking on you.

  1. 01Find someone to sit or video-call with for a fixed length of time.
  2. 02Say out loud what each of you will do in that block.
  3. 03Work in silence, in parallel. No accountability speeches.
  4. 04At the end, say what you got done — one sentence each.

Most people are surprised by how much this changes and how little it requires.

Someone else in the room changes the physics of the task.

Research says

Why urgency outperforms importance

Descriptions of ADHD consistently emphasise difficulty acting on future-oriented intentions, with behaviour more strongly shaped by immediate contingencies. Manufactured urgency works because it converts a distant consequence into a present one — the kind the activation system actually registers.

Reframe

I can only do things at the last minute.

I respond to urgency — so I'll build smaller versions of it before the panic arrives.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Interest, urgency, novelty and social presence are the four levers that reliably work.
  2. 02Panic is real activation arriving too late — build a cheaper version, earlier.
  3. 03Body doubling is presence, not supervision, and it is usually the strongest lever available.
