A black and white workplace scene, two people working at a laptop

Lesson 02 · 11 min

The Coping That Worked (Until It Didn't)

You built a life out of workarounds: adrenaline, perfectionism, overcommitting, other people's urgency. Then the load grew, and the scaffolding didn't.

Listen first

Listen first: the scaffolding

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

Most late-recognised adults weren't doing nothing all those years. They were coping — ingeniously, expensively, invisibly.

Understanding which of your strategies were actually scaffolding explains both your successes and the exact moment things started falling apart.

The scaffolding inventory

Four workarounds that look like strengths

Adrenaline: doing everything at the deadline because panic was the only reliable fuel. It works — until the stakes get too high to risk, or too low to trigger.

Perfectionism: checking everything five times because you learned you can't trust your attention. It works — until the checking takes longer than the work.

Overcommitting: saying yes to everything because novelty and external expectation get you moving. It works — until the maths of your week stops working.

Borrowed structure: partners, colleagues, parents and systems quietly holding your reminders. It works — until the structure leaves, or resents the job.

The Old Rules Audit

Which workarounds were actually scaffolding — and what each one really costs.

The goal isn't deleting the workaround. It's stopping it being your only one.

Say it accurately

You didn't suddenly get worse. The load quietly outgrew the scaffolding.

Pick one

When did your scaffolding start failing?

Reframe

I used to cope. Now I can't even do that.

My coping was load-rated. The load went up. I need better engineering, not more shame.

Try this

Cost out one workaround

Pick the strategy you rely on most and price it honestly.

  1. 01Name it: the all-nighters, the quadruple-checking, the yes-to-everything.
  2. 02What does it buy you? (Real output. Credit it.)
  3. 03What does it cost? (Sleep, relationships, the crash, the resentment.)
  4. 04Is there a cheaper source of the same fuel? There usually is — the other courses are full of them.

The goal isn't to delete the workaround. It's to stop it being your only one.

I thought I was getting worse at life. I was actually just running out of adrenaline to pay for it with.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Adrenaline, perfectionism, overcommitting and borrowed structure are scaffolding, not personality.
  2. 02Things fall apart when the load outgrows the scaffolding — that's engineering, not decline.
  3. 03Credit what the workarounds bought you, then go find cheaper fuel.
