Make the Bag Do the Work

The bag can remember better than you can, if you set it up once and stop repacking it every morning.

Listen first

Listen first: the night-before rule

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

Mornings are the worst possible time to make decisions. You're rushed, half-awake and looking for one specific thing.

So mornings shouldn't contain any decisions at all.

The principle

Evening-you is more capable than morning-you

Not because evenings are calm, but because there's no time pressure and nobody shouting up the stairs.

Packing the night before turns the morning into one action: pick up the bag. That's it. No checking, no searching.

The second half of it: some things should never leave the bag. Charger, pens, headphones. Anything that comes out will eventually not go back.

Morning rule

One action: pick up the bag.

The Backpack System

Stop remembering what to bring. Make the bag do it.

What do you actually forget?

Try this

The door test

Where the bag sits matters more than how well it's packed.

  • Bag in your roomBag against the front door
  • Checking the timetable in the morningChecking it while packing at night
  • Taking things out to use at homeKeeping a second set at home so nothing leaves the bag

You should have to physically step over it to leave the house.

Quick win · 5 min

Empty it once

Tip the whole bag out on the floor. Bin the rubbish, take out what doesn't belong, and put back only what lives there permanently. Do this once a week — Sunday works — and the bag stays usable.

What this looks like in real life

PE kit

It's not that you forget it. It's that it's in the wash, upstairs, or in a different bag. Same kit, one place, packed the night before.

Homework you finished

The most annoying one. Finished work goes straight into the bag, not on the desk 'for the morning'.

Charger

Buy two. One lives in the bag and never comes out.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Pack at night; mornings should require no decisions.
  2. 02Some items live in the bag permanently.
  3. 03The bag goes by the door, not in your room.
