Why You Forget Things You Definitely Knew

You didn't forget the homework. You remembered it eight times — just never while standing next to your bag.

Listen first

Before you read: what this course is for

You knew about it. You thought about it in maths, on the bus and at 11pm.

You did not think about it in the thirty seconds where you could have put it in your bag.

That gap is what we're fixing. Not your effort.

What's happening

Your brain has limited working memory

Working memory is the part that holds information while you use it — instructions, a list, what someone just said. Differences in working memory are one of the most consistent findings in ADHD research.

So when a teacher says four things at the end of a lesson while everyone is packing up, holding all four isn't a fair test of caring.

The answer is not concentrating harder. It's getting things out of your head fast, into something that keeps them for you.

The real problem

You remember it — just never at the useful moment.

Notice

What actually goes wrong for you?

None of these are about intelligence. All of them are fixable with setup.

Reframe

I need to stop being so forgetful.

I need fewer things to depend on me remembering.

Research says

This is documented, not an excuse

The 2021 international consensus statement summarises decades of evidence that ADHD involves real differences in self-regulation and attention. Knowing that changes the strategy: build supports, don't just try to want it more.

If it only exists in your head, it isn't saved yet.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Working memory is limited, and ADHD lowers the ceiling.
  2. 02Forgetting is a timing problem, not a caring problem.
  3. 03Get things out of your head fast, into something reliable.
