Coming Back When You Drift

Everybody's attention drifts. The skill isn't never drifting — it's noticing, and coming back kindly.

Listen first

Listen first: the comeback

Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser

Here's something nobody tells you: EVERYONE'S attention drifts. Grown-ups' too. The whole game is what happens next.

There are two ways to come back. The mean way: 'Ugh, I did it AGAIN.' The detective way: 'Caught you. Come back.' They lead to very different afternoons.

How coming back works

Notice. Name it. Come back. That's the whole skill.

First you notice your attention left. That moment of noticing is actually your brain being clever — it's the most important part.

Then you name where it went: 'thinking about Minecraft.' Naming it helps your brain let go of it.

Then you come back to the thing. No speech about how you failed. Just: back. Every time you do this, the come-back muscle gets stronger.

The rule

Coming back kindly counts. Coming back cross doesn't help.

My Come-Back Plan

Drifting is normal. This is your plan for noticing and coming back kindly.

Coming back kindly counts. Every come-back makes the muscle stronger.

Notice

What could help you notice you've drifted?

What this looks like in real life

Reading

You read a whole page and remember nothing. Normal. Back to the top of the page — no punishment needed.

Listening

Someone's talking and you drifted. It's okay to say: 'Sorry, my brain wandered — can you say that last bit again?'

Homework

Halfway through question one you're thinking about your birthday. Caught you. Write 'birthday' on a scrap paper, back to question one.

Try this

Make a parking spot for ideas

Inside thieves hate waiting. So don't make them wait — park them.

  1. 01Keep a scrap of paper next to your work.
  2. 02When an idea or worry shouts, write one word and leave it there.
  3. 03After the work, visit the parking spot. The ideas waited. They always do.

Writing it down tells your brain: heard you, not forgotten, later.

I used to think drifting meant I was bad at school. Now I know noticing the drift is the actual skill.

Keep this

Three things to take.

  1. 01Everyone drifts — the skill is noticing and coming back, not never leaving.
  2. 02Name where your attention went, then come back without the cross speech.
  3. 03Park loud ideas on paper instead of fighting them.
