Places That Help Your Brain
Where you do a thing changes how hard it is. You can build a spot that does some of the concentrating for you.

Listen first: the focus spot
Spoken introduction · read aloud in your browser
Doing homework at the kitchen table while dinner cooks, someone chats and the dog performs — that's concentration on hard mode.
Your brain reads the place around you. Give it a place that says 'we're doing the thing now' and the thing gets easier.
Why places matter
Your spot can hold your attention for you
Every thing in your view is quietly asking your brain a question: play with me? eat me? watch me? A busy room asks a hundred questions at once.
A focus spot asks only one. It doesn't have to be a fancy desk. It has to be the same spot, facing away from the action, with only what you need on it.
Bonus trick: your brain learns places. Use the same spot each time and just SITTING there starts to feel like starting.
Course tool · Lesson 04
Build My Focus Spot
Design a place that does some of the concentrating for you.
What would wreck your spot?
Same spot, same setup, every time. Your brain learns places — let it.
Try this
Design your focus spot
With a grown-up, pick a place and set it up. It takes ten minutes.
- 01Pick the spot: same place every time, back to the busy part of the room.
- 02Clear it: only today's things on it. Everything else lives somewhere else.
- 03Stock it: pens, scrap paper, a fidget, a timer — in a box that stays there.
- 04Test it with something small today. Five minutes counts as a win.
The spot doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be yours and repeatable.
Pick one
What would wreck your focus spot?

Keep this
Three things to take.
- 01Places talk to your brain — build one that says 'do the thing'.
- 02Same spot + same setup = starting gets easier over time.
- 03Only today's job gets desk space. Everything else lives elsewhere.
