Why Is It So Hard to Listen When Something Else Is Happening?
The teacher is talking. So is the kid next to you, the hallway outside, and the poster you keep re-reading. Here's what's really going on when too many things want your attention at once.

Your teacher says, "Turn to page fourteen." At the exact same moment, someone drops a pencil case behind you, the radiator clicks, a friend whispers something two seats over, and you notice your shoelace is untied. By the time you look up, the class has already turned the page, and you have no idea what happened.
It isn't that you weren't listening. In a way, you were listening to everything — which meant you couldn't really listen to any one thing all the way through. That's a real, common way an ADHD brain handles a room full of competing sounds and sights, and it has nothing to do with how much you care.
When lots of things happen at once
Most people's brains have something like a bouncer at the door of their attention — a part that decides which sounds and sights get let in and which ones get turned away. For a lot of kids with ADHD, that bouncer lets almost everything in. The dropped pencil case, the whisper, the radiator, and the teacher's instructions all arrive at roughly the same volume, instead of the teacher's voice being turned up and everything else turned down.
That means the more is happening around you, the harder it gets to catch any single thing all the way through. A quiet room with one voice talking is manageable. A classroom with twenty-five other kids, a hallway noise, a flickering light, and a worksheet in front of you is a much bigger job for your attention to sort through — and it's sorting through all of it at once, not being lazy about any of it.

Why some places are so much harder than others
Classrooms are especially tough because they're built for the kind of listening that assumes your brain will automatically filter. Open-plan rooms, group work, assemblies, and busy hallways all stack several sound sources and several visual distractions on top of each other. It's not that you can't listen in general — it's that this particular room is asking your attention to do more sorting work than it can comfortably keep up with.
The same is true for conversations. Talking with one friend, face to face, in a quiet spot, is usually fine. Add two more voices, some background music, and someone walking past, and suddenly you're catching fragments instead of full sentences. That's not you drifting off on purpose — it's your attention getting pulled in several directions by things that are all, technically, worth noticing.
Tiredness and hunger make this even harder, because sorting through competing sounds takes real effort, and that effort runs out faster when you're low on sleep or food. A classroom that feels manageable at 9 a.m. can feel impossible by 2 p.m., even though nothing about the room has changed — you have.

Give your ears less to sort
You usually can't make a room quiet, but you can often change how much of it reaches you.
- 01Ask to sit near the front and away from the door, the window, or the pencil sharpener.
- 02If a teacher gives spoken instructions, ask for them written on the board too — you can check back instead of holding it all in your head.
- 03Try repeating instructions back in your own words right away, before anything else grabs your attention.
- 04In noisy group settings, ask to sit next to (not across from) the person you most need to hear.

Researchers describe attention as depending heavily on filtering — the brain's ability to dampen down less relevant sounds and sights so a chosen one can stand out. In ADHD, this filtering process tends to be less automatic, which is one reason busy or noisy environments create disproportionately more difficulty than quiet, low-stimulation ones.
