Your Environment Is Competing for Your Attention
The open-plan office, the phone face-up on the desk, the fourteen browser tabs, the pile of mail by the door — none of it is neutral. Your surroundings are not a backdrop to your attention. They're actively bidding for it.

Is your workspace helping you focus, or is it running a quiet campaign against you? Ask that plainly, and most people realize they've never actually asked it — they treat the desk, the office layout, the phone on the table as fixed, neutral facts of life rather than as design decisions with real consequences for a brain that filters distraction less automatically than most.
Attention isn't just internal
It's tempting to think of attention as something that happens entirely inside your head — a matter of willpower, discipline, or how well you slept. But attention is deeply environmental. It responds constantly to what's around you: movement in your peripheral vision, sounds, notifications, clutter, even the layout of a room. For most people, this responsiveness is a mild background hum. For a brain with ADHD, where the automatic filter between 'relevant' and 'irrelevant' input is less reliable, environmental pull isn't background noise — it's often louder than the task itself.
This reframes a lot of what gets labeled as poor focus or poor discipline. If a task keeps failing in one setting and succeeding in another, the honest question isn't 'why can't you concentrate' — it's 'what is this room asking of your attention, and is that more than the task is offering back.'
The open-plan problem
Open-plan offices were sold on collaboration and have delivered, for a lot of ADHD brains, something closer to a low-grade obstacle course. The design combines several of the worst-case ingredients at once: visual movement at the edge of your vision as people walk past, overheard fragments of other people's conversations that your brain treats as potentially relevant and can't fully tune out, unpredictable noise level, and a general sense of being watchable, which adds its own low-level vigilance.
None of these individually would derail most tasks. Together, and repeated all day, they add up to a constant tax on attentional resources that colleagues in quieter roles or private offices simply aren't paying. This is why the same person can do focused, high-quality work from a kitchen table at 7 a.m. and struggle to complete a fraction of it at a desk in a bustling office by 2 p.m. — it's rarely a motivation problem. It's an input problem.

The phone doesn't have to buzz to win
Phones deserve their reputation, but the mechanism is more specific than 'it's distracting.' A phone sitting face-up on a desk pulls attention even when it doesn't light up, because part of the brain is monitoring for the possibility that it might. Research on this kind of 'brain drain' from a nearby phone has found that simply having it visible and within reach — not using it, not even receiving a notification from it — measurably reduces available cognitive capacity, because some portion of attention is quietly reserved for checking on it.
For a brain that already struggles to keep a filter between relevant and irrelevant stimuli, that reserved capacity is expensive. The fix isn't more willpower to not pick it up. It's removing the object from the field of anticipation altogether — a different room, a drawer, a bag — so there's nothing left to monitor.
Tabs, clutter, and unfinished business
The same logic applies to digital and physical clutter. Fourteen open browser tabs aren't just visually busy — each one is a small unresolved task the brain periodically re-registers, a bit like a dozen sticky notes each reading 'don't forget about me.' A cluttered desk does the same thing physically: the pile of mail, the unopened package, the stack of files each function as a low-grade reminder of something unfinished, competing quietly with whatever you're actually trying to do.
This is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as an aesthetic preference. A visually calm space isn't calm because it looks nice — it's calm because it's making fewer competing claims on the attention system. Removing forty percent of the visual objects in a workspace can measurably lighten the cognitive load of everything done inside it, even if nothing about the actual work has changed.
You don't need more discipline to ignore your environment. You need an environment that asks less of you in the first place.

Run a one-hour environment audit
Rather than guessing at what's distracting, spend one working hour actually noticing what pulls your attention away from the task in front of you, then redesign around the results.
- 01For one hour, keep a small notepad or a notes app open and jot a single word every time your attention leaves the task — 'noise,' 'phone,' 'tab,' 'clutter,' 'hunger.'
- 02At the end of the hour, tally the categories. This turns a vague feeling of 'I can't focus in here' into a specific, addressable list.
- 03Address the top one or two items concretely: move the phone to another room; close every tab except the one you're using; put a physical object (a plant, a folder) between you and the busiest sightline in the room; put on noise-reducing headphones, even with nothing playing.
- 04Re-run the same one-hour audit a few days later in the adjusted environment and compare the tally — this gives you real evidence of what's working, rather than a hunch.
- 05At work, if a private space or booth is available even occasionally, reserve it for the tasks your audit flagged as hardest, rather than treating quiet space as a reward for finishing easy things first.

What the research says
There's solid general cognitive-science evidence that the mere visible presence of a phone reduces available cognitive capacity, even without use or notifications — a phenomenon often referred to as 'brain drain.' Separately, ADHD-specific research describes reduced automaticity in filtering irrelevant environmental stimuli, which is a useful descriptive concept rather than a single measurable test. Together, these support the idea that environmental design carries more weight for ADHD attention than it does for the average nervous system, though individual sensitivity varies.
